Its American roots stem from the artists of Romania and France and it was the style of choice or natural for those who might have had to buy their second-hand.
The beatniks of the 1940s and 1950s were artists and mostly traveling vagabonds. Their style was influenced by the bohemian artists of Europe (Paris in particular). The European version is often depicted with a turtleneck and hat. The style continued to flourish in the United States during the 1960s and 1970s as it was picked up by the hippie movement. “Hippie” is a term originating from the “hipsters” of the Beat movement.
