Project Description:
The assembly and disassembly of objects with uncertain shapes, sizes, conditions, and awkward shapes pose significant challenges in manufacturing processes, particularly in automated and robotic operations. This project aims to address these challenges by exploring technologies and methods for flexible and adaptable autonomous assembly and disassembly processes using robotic manipulators with humanoid hands and vision systems. The project objectives include:

1. Investigating human assembly and disassembly dexterity of awkward shaped objects using both arms and hands.
2. Developing planning, testing, learning, and adaptation strategies for assembly and disassembly operations based on the findings from Objective 1.
3. Building infrastructure using UR3E/UR5E robots and DLR-HIT II Robot Hands to implement the strategies developed in Objective 2 for handling complex assembly and disassembly tasks.
Eligibility:
Candidates should typically hold an undergraduate degree at a 2.1 level (or Non-UK equivalent) in Engineering or a similar relevant science discipline.
English Language Requirements: If applicable, IELTS 6.5 overall (with at least 5.5 in each component) or equivalent recognized by Swansea University.
This scholarship is open to candidates of any nationality.
ATAS Clearance:
Some applicants may require ATAS clearance. Details on eligibility for the ATAS scheme are available on the UK Government website. ATAS clearance is not required during the scholarship application process but may be necessary upon receiving a scholarship offer.
This scholarship covers full tuition fees and provides an annual stipend at the UKRI rate (currently £17,668 for 2022/23). Additional research expenses will also be available.
